The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search for a missing kayaker off Tavares Bay on Saturday.
Kula resident Jerry Morgan, 63, was reported missing on Wednesday night by his family after he didn’t come home from kayaking earlier that day, according to the Maui Police Department. His white Toyota Tacoma was found unattended at Kuau Bay later that evening, and his kayak was discovered partially submerged less than 1 nautical mile northeast of Hookipa Beach Park Thursday morning.
The Coast Guard, MPD and Maui Fire Department conducted 37 searches over 76 hours, covering 1,147 square nautical miles, said Petty Officer 1st Class Colby Anderson, a Sector Honolulu Command Center watchstander.
“While it is not an easy decision, we have suspended the active search pending any further new information,” Anderson said in a news release Saturday.
Morgan is described as Caucasian, 6 feet tall and 215 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes, according to MPD. Police said it is unknown what type of clothing or footwear he was last seen wearing.
Anyone with information on Morgan’s whereabouts should contact MPD’s nonemergency number at (808) 244-6400. In an emergency, dial 911 and refer to MPD report No. 23-030269.
